#M-004 - Single Breasted Civilian Frock Coat

Melissa Keen

The best way to summarize my thoughts on this pattern is "all's well that ends well"... It was a good pattern, but some of the instructions were really vague, or even completely missing steps. For example. with the tail of the coat, I believe there is a seam allowance left out somewhere - the pieces simply COULD NOT fit the way they were illustrated and explained! I had to seriously fudge to make it look like it was supposed to. At the same time, I am very pleased with the finished product. SO, I guess a little headache here and there from re-reading and re-reading the instructions wasn't too bad! (the Shirt and Trousers shown are Simplicity 5035 and the Vest is Simplicity 5037) Please forgive my female mannequin for not having the correct build! The outfit really does fit nicely... Pictured in the photos on the right.

This pattern is awesome. All illustrations are clear and accurate. It is a complicated project but it went together quickly and beautifully. I will buy more from them and recommend this pattern to anyone. It does take at least medium experience as the coat is tightly fitted.

#W-002 - 1850s-60s Drawers

Directions unclear, drawings are pitiful, as is the amount of fabric they tell you to purchase. They also tell you to cut on the selvage, which is impossible given the way the pieces go. Use Past Patterns or even SIMPLICITY.

There are many more patterns which give much better results! If you feel that you must do this one, use the instructions for the one with the drawstring. Works much better!
