Wine & Peace: Regency

Saturday, March 24th 1:00-4:00pm
Wente Estate Winery, Livermore, CA

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a person in possession of a good glass, must be in want of WINE.”
- Lauren Moyer, The Jane Austen Revisionist

Join us for a delightful day, of tasting wine at the beautiful Wente Estates! Don your Regency Attire, forsake your chaperon duties, and raise a glass with your fine costumed compatriots. While these may not be the sweet wines Jane Austen mentioned in her works, they are great examples of the fine appellations of the Bay Area’s backyard.

Costume

Regency day wear, 1795 - 1820. Fashion in European and European-influenced countries saw the final triumph of undress or informal styles over the brocades, lace, periwigs and powder of the earlier 18th century. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, no one wanted to appear to be a member of the French aristocracy, and people began using clothing more as a form of individual expression of the true self than as a pure indication of social status. As a result, the shifts that occurred in fashion at the turn of the 19th century granted the opportunity to present new public identities that also provided insights into their private selves.
