The 2010 GBACG Workshop Series Presents:
Victorian Corset Workshop

Have you always wanted to make your own corset? Maybe it’s time you made a new one? At the end of this workshop you’ll know why they "build" corsets instead of make them! In this two-part workshop, experienced sewers will learn to alter the pattern to make their own custom corset for historical and sci-fi costuming. You will be able to get expert fitting help while having the mysteries of building corsets revealed with master teacher, Carol Wood. Two days plus completing homework between sessions should allow for enough time to finish your corset. We will be using the Laughing Moon Mercantile #100 pattern, you'll be able to make the Dore straight seam corset or the Silverado bust gore corset, which can be the foundations for your 1837-1899 fashions.

Instructor Bio: Carol Wood, professional pattern maker and costumer has been researching, recreating and wearing historical garments for decades. Her work has been shown in galleries, appeared on stage and been honored with awards. Carol has studied corsetry under a number of instructors and has taught corset classes for Lacis.

Supplies students should bring to the First Session:

• Sewing machine including attachments and bobbins
• Sewing notions (needles, straight pins, scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, etc.)
• Drafting tools (pencils, sharpener, 18" plastic ruler, red felt tip pen, etc.)
• Thread
• Plain muslin: 1 yard for mock up (do not prewash)
• Pattern: #100 - Ladies’ Victorian Underwear by Laughing Moon Mercantile
• Fashion fabric (if covering corset) and lining, both 1 - 1.3 yd and preshrunk
• Tracing pattern paper, if you do not wish to cut your pattern

Supplies students should bring to the Second Session:

• Preshrunk coutil, 1-2 yards depending on construction style
• Small and medium awl
• Corset boning, busk, and grommets, tipped corset lacing

Note on Supplies: Instructor will have unbleached coutil available for purchase at $14/yard at the first session. All other supplies should be brought to each session by students. Good online corset supply resources are www.richardthethread.com, www.farthingalesla.com, or www.corsetmaking.com. Bay Area corset supply resources are Lacis (Berkeley) and Britex (SF). If you do not already own the pattern, it will be available to purchase at the workshop.

There is a parking lot adjacent to the church behind the neighboring building- entrance is on Clay St. There is also metered parking and a pay lot on the corner of 7th and Clay that is $2.00 all day on weekends.
